Resume Tips

  • Be sure to use accurate dates of employment -- do no inflate experience by lengthening time at any position.
  • Use bullet points to highlight position responsibilities instead of paragraphs. This provides an organized look and increases the chances of the content being read.
  • Do not list salary expectations on resume.
  • Do not list hobbies, unless they are directly related to the position for which you are applying.
  • Do not leave gaps in employment history. Fill any gaps with explanations, making sure to include volunteer work or association participation during that time period.
  • Try to keep your resume to 1-2 pages in length. Anything more is too time-consuming for the recruiter/hiring manager.
  • Have someone you know take a look. Use people you know that are in hiring positions, and see what they think of your resume. Take their constructive feedback and make changes if you feel they are warranted.
  • Use spell check. There is nothing worse than reviewing a resume with grammar and spelling errors. It shows a lack of attention to detail.
  • Use key words. Take words from the job description and use them in your resume.
  • Do no include a picture of yourself anywhere on your resume.
  • Do not list your age, marital status, # of children, religious affiliation, etc. Leave out all personal information.
