Overview:

Home infusion pharmacies are licensed and provide medications, nutritional support, infusion pumps, and infusion therapies to patients in their homes. Usually a home infusion pharmacy team consists of pharmacists, nurses, and technicians who work closely with the healthcare provider. As pharmacy continues to grow, so does the number of home infusion and in home pharmacy providers, increasing the number of opportunities for pharmacists who want to specialize in the home infusion industry. However, most pharmacies require strong IV skills with at least one year of home infusion experience or experience in a clinicial hospital setting. This is an industry that is hard to break into after being in retail for 15 years because of the hands on approach and clinical responsibilities that require pharmacist to have practical experience as a new graduate or have already practiced in the field.

A home infusion pharmacist will administer non-oral medications to long-term therapy patients and are becoming popular as a safe alternative to in-patient care. General responsibilities include preparation of parenteral products and IV's, modifying drug regimens, drug information consultation, and prescription verification.
