Over 3,000 full-time faculty members have chosen a career in academic pharmacy. Academic pharmacy is a career option and as the number of pharmacy students continues to rise, good employment opportuities are expected. Not only are there more pharmacy faculty members required, but the career for academia has expanded to include clinical practitioners who pursue careers in academic pharmacy. The various academic pharmacy disciplines include administration, biological sciences, clinical science, continuing education, experiential education, drug discovery, medicinal/natural products and pharmacology.
So maybe ask yourself if you have ever been inspired by a professor whose style and motivation tapped into your ability to make a difference. Or have you been told that teaching others come naturally to you? Would you enjoy interacting with leading research scientists and educating future pharmacists about the many opportunities in pharmacy? If the answer is yes, seriously consider an academic career. As a student, you can look into rotations offering teaching experience to get a better feel for whether or not this is something you would like to pursue.
